Habit tracker

Type your habits, pick the month, and print a tracker with a circle for every day. Fill one in each time you show up.

The month
Your habits

Up to 15 habits. Blank rows are added under yours so the sheet always has at least 10.

Your settings are remembered in this browser only, so they are here next time. Nothing is uploaded.

    How it works

Each habit gets a row and each day of the month gets a column, with the weekday initial over the date so you can see your weekends (they are shaded too). The number of columns comes from the calendar: 31 for January, 30 for April, 28 or 29 for February. A Goal column sits beside each habit, and a Done column at the end has "/31" (or the month’s length) ready for your total. Below the grid are lines for notes on how the month went.

Tips that make a tracker stick

    • Make it small. "Walk 10 minutes" beats "get fit". A habit you can do on a bad day is one you keep.
    • Tie it to something you already do. "After coffee, read 10 pages" gives the habit a cue.
    • Keep the sheet where you see it. On the fridge, by the bed, or in your planner.
    • Never miss twice. One empty circle is normal. Lally and colleagues found a single missed day did not set people back; try not to let it become two.
    • Review on the last day. Count your circles, note what helped, and decide which habits carry over.

What the research says about timing

In Lally et al. (2010), "How are habits formed", 96 volunteers chose a daily eating, drinking or exercise habit and logged it for 12 weeks. The median time for the behavior to reach its most automatic was 66 days, with a wide range from 18 to 254 days. Plan on two or three months of sheets for a new habit.

    Questions people ask

How does the habit tracker work?

List the habits you want to build, print the month, and fill in a circle on each day you do one. Each row has a column for every day of the month, so 28, 29, 30 or 31 circles, with the weekday letter above each date. At the end of the month, count the filled circles and write the total in the Done column.

How many habits can I track?

Up to 15. Starting with three to five is easier to keep up; empty rows are left on the sheet so you can add one by hand later. The rows get shorter as you add more, so all of them fit on one page.

What should I put in the Goal column?

Whatever makes the habit measurable for you: "Daily", "5 a week", "20 days" or a number like "10k steps". A goal of most days, rather than every day, makes it easier to get back on track after a miss.

How long does it take to form a habit?

Longer than the "21 days" myth. In a 2010 study in the European Journal of Social Psychology (Lally and colleagues), it took people a median of 66 days for a daily habit to feel automatic, with a range from 18 to 254 days. Missing a single day did not undo progress. That is why the tracker is monthly: plan on two or three sheets.

    Does it handle leap years?

Yes. February gets 29 columns in leap years (2028 is the next one) and 28 otherwise, and every month starts under the right weekday letter. The dates are worked out in your browser for any year from 1900 to 2200.

Can I keep my habit list for next month?

Yes. Your habits, goals and settings are remembered in this browser. Come back next month, change the month, and print again. Nothing is uploaded, and "Start over" clears it.
